Unstoppable: The Incredible Power of Faith in Action by Nick Vujicic

What an uplifting and inspiring true story of a young man, who has found a deep sense of joy and purpose in traveling the world to speak about how God has blessed him in his life without arms and legs. He doesn’t sugarcoat his journey but tells of his struggles learning how to cope with his severe disability, fears of the future, and cruel reactions of others. Looking back on his growing up years, Nick has clearly developed a strong foundation of faith in God, who motivates him to share his hope with people dealing with a wide variety of difficult circumstances. His message is rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, not only as Savior but also Redeemer of all that may seem wrong in this life.

I especially enjoyed the several full pages of color photographs showing the diverse individuals Nick has impacted with his encouraging story. I had the privilege of hearing him speak several years ago at a Christian concert in Olathe, Colorado. I was so impressed by his confidence in the Lord despite what would seem to be insurmountable affliction.  He is living proof of what God can do in someone who chooses to put their faith into action and embrace a life of meaning no matter what the obstacles. I especially enjoyed the scenarios in the book of Nick’s interactions with other families affected by similar congenital lack of limbs.

A criticism of this book is that the writing style is somewhat sappy. The author writes more from an emotional perspective than a cognitive one, which is irritating to me simply because of my own personal preferences. He also tries to appeal to a broad readership base, not only to those with physical disabilities, whom I had expected to be the main focus. Chapters address multiple problems, including relationship and career issues, bullying, self-destructive behaviors, and emotional crises, and I found myself skimming over material that didn’t interest me. Even so, God is clearly using Nick Vujicic to impart wisdom and hope by reaching out to those who are hurting and sharing his uniquely amazing life experiences.
