The Great American Slow Cooker Book by Weinstein and Scarbrough

cover“500 easy recipes for every day and every size machine” includes breakfast, soups, meat, poultry, fish, vegetables/side dishes, and desserts/drinks. This is a wonderful cookbook with easy and practical recipes for my favorite kitchen appliance (aside from the coffeepot of course). Each recipe comes with a proportional ingredient chart for three different size machines. The introduction taught me everything I ever wanted to know about slow cookers. There are helpful hints galore for each meal. I began by attempting a breakfast dish called overnight oatmeal, and I put my crock pot on a timer to start at midnight. It was nice to wake up to a steaming pot of ready-to-eat porridge, which simply needed a bit of brown sugar and strawberries on top. I especially enjoyed the creative instructions for making leftovers into a tasty fried treat the next day. I wish there were more color photos than just the few in the middle, but the book is already 500 pages long. I am looking forward to trying many more delicious dishes that can simmer all day as this is definitely the best way to cook a variety of meats, stews, and other flavorful yet simple concoctions.
