The Spirit-Filled Life by Charles Stanley

imagesI highly recommend this intriguing and well-written book on getting better acquainted with the Holy Spirit. I’ve always enjoyed listening to Dr. Stanley on the radio, and his pleasant voice silently narrated my reading of this book. The subtitle “discover the joy of surrendering to the Holy Spirit” caught my attention, and I was pleased to find a very balanced perspective of learning to walk by the Spirit. Confusing topics such as baptism/filling/indwelling of the Holy Spirit are clearly addressed in the author’s usual credible and engaging style. I enjoyed his own personal testimony and stories from pastoral counseling to illustrate his points, which are drawn directly from Scripture. I appreciated the emphasis on fruits of the Spirit as evidence of a changed life, versus gifts of the Spirit, which are divinely dispersed and do not necessarily reflect spiritual maturity. Hearing from God is often a challenge for believers, and this book presents the validity of four simple and practical “markers” by which we can discern His voice: peace, one’s conscience, the Word of God, and wisdom. I am encouraged by theimages1 application of this teaching because I have experienced that faint but persistent “nudging” inside that tries to guide my decisions and behavior but when dismissed can lead to regret . . . and in hindsight, it is painfully clear how the absence of peace and an unsettled conscience can grip the heart of one not consistently searching the Bible or seeking godly wisdom. I hope to be more attuned to His leading and willing to listen, even when it feels uncomfortable at the time. Living daily under the influence of the Holy Spirit brings glory to God and joy to the Christian!
