1 Samuel for You by Tim Chester

51Xn2nQzTIL__AA160_The format of this book is unique in that it has three purposes explained on the cover: reading, feeding, and leading. The author explains the entire Book of 1 Samuel verse by verse and utilizes the chapter and verse numbers liberally throughout the book. The commentary focuses on the “tale of two kings” (p. 211) Saul and David, whose stories illustrate God’s orchestration of all people and events. This in-depth writing is comprehensive and well-reasoned, but I was confused at times and lost interest in trying to follow all of the details. I would have preferred a single genre rather than attempting to combine narrative reading, daily devotional, and Bible study. I appreciated the end of chapter sections that pulled it all together and offered important concluding remarks, as well as questions for reflection. The glossary was an interesting addition that may be helpful to some readers.

Required Federal Trade Commission disclaimer: I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through Cross Focused Reviews in exchange for an honest appraisal.
