Stay, by Dave Burchett

This is an absolutely delightful book illustrating meaningful “lessons my dogs taught me about life, loss, and grace.” The author chronicles his experiences with several beloved pets, primarily his Labrador retriever named Hannah. When she was diagnosed with cancer, he began paying more attention to her example of joyfully living in the moment. He started to notice how she naturally portrayed important truths in their relationship that he could easily apply to his own relationship with God. I was impressed with how well written this book is, which is a wonderful read for those who can relate to the unique gifts endowed within animal companions by the Creator. I truly enjoyed the stories of grace, trust, forgiveness, acceptance, and gratitude found in these pages. I also appreciated hearing about the challenges of Maggie, the next rescue dog welcomed into the author’s family after losing Hannah. Viewing her behaviors through a lens of humor and the realization that unconditional love has covered a multitude of sins in my own life were appropriate conclusions to this heartwarming story. I highly recommend Stay for dog lovers at every season of life (both you and your pets). The focus was not on the cancer diagnosis but rather on how Hannah continued to live her life to the fullest.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through the Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for an honest appraisal.
